Audiences and Institutions for Final Project
Most coming-of-age films target the teen (12-18)/young adult (18-25) age group. Because these films often follow the transition from childhood to adulthood, viewers who are experiencing this transition simultaneously tend to find comfort in the relatability of these films. Based on this fact, me and my group's target audience will also lie within
this teen-young adult age range. Additionally, many coming-of-age films follow a female protagonist. This is what my group and I are planning on executing in our film opening scene. Because of this, our target audience may consist of more females who can relate to this main character’s experiences. Concerning socioeconomic status, I would assume that middle to low class individuals would appreciate this genre the most. Coming-of-age films usually emphasize common struggles experienced as we move through life. So, people that experience these same struggles would have the optimal viewing experience. Furthermore, as these films often take place in small, homey towns, viewers who live this more casual lifestyle will get more out of the film. These demographics are applicable to the target audiences of most coming-of-age films. My group and I plan to follow this pattern. It is important to note that this genre has been successful for many years because of how reliable the subject matter is. Teens will be going through big changes no matter what time we are in. This is likely why my group and I gravitated towards creating an opening scene conforming to this genre, as we are at this point in our lives now. It is evident that this genre’s long-term success is due to its strong appeal to the teen and young adult demographic. Overall, the target audience for coming-of-age films is routine. This fact is helpful, because it gives me and my group a thorough understanding of what concepts we need to be sure to exhibit in our scene.
Usually, coming-of-age films reach their target audience through a strong marketing campaign. One great example of this can be seen in the promotion of the film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Prior to the films production, the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before book was released. This gained popularity and fan excitement around the talk of a movie adaptation being made, which helped the marketing campaign’s success. Netflix also heavily leaned into the unquestionable chemistry between stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo. Highlighting their seemingly flawless love story grabs the attention of a younger audience. In doing this, viewers are given a couple they can look up to. The campaign also largely relied on the usage of social media platforms, such as Instagram and Twitter. Emphasizing various aesthetic, quotable, and GIF-worthy moments from the film contributed to its large success. Because so many people in the target demographic are active on these platforms, this campaigning method was highly effective. With this in mind, I believe the best way to promote my film would follow a similar procedure. Reliance on social media to raise awareness of my film would be very beneficial, as social media sites reach viewers from across the globe. Posting clips that highlight my film’s aesthetic and “vibe” would help viewers form my target audience resonate with it. I would also devise a trailer that was methodically crafted to appeal to my target audience. The trailer would be a large part of grabbing the attention of viewers, enticing them to watch the film when it is released. The methods listed above worked exquisitely for the film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Though Netflix has not provided specific data, the company did note that the movie was one of their most-viewed original films. The film also showed high repeat viewing among audiences. I believe utilizing these strategies would be beneficial in increasing my film’s popularity
